That's Not My Name

You've likely seen this Starbucks ad, or perhaps heard the original version of "That's Not My Name" on the radio. As with many catchy tunes, this has been an earworm for me lately. The other night, I was driving to Sam's to help a friend pick up a crazy big order. Since the drive was about 20 minutes long, I got in the van and said, "Holy Spirit, these 20 uninterrupted minutes are yours to say whatever I need to hear. I'm listening, Amen."

As I pulled onto the highway, "That's Not My Name" popped into my head...again. A bit annoyed by the distraction I was like, "Of course this would happen when I'm trying to make space for God to speak." The lyrics rolled around in my brain a few times until it got to the refrain, "That's not my name, that's not my name..."

Immediately, I was reminded of some persuasions I'd been entertaining about who I am. "I'm not good enough. I'm inadequate. I'm afraid. I'm unworthy..." I could go on, but you get the idea. Suddenly, those lyrics were washing over me with a holiness that was completely unexpected. There I was, behind the wheel of a minivan, on my way to Sam's Club, listening to the Ting Tings, crying my eyes out because the Holy Spirit was talking to my heart about an identity crisis. Kinda crazy, right?

"Do not fear for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name; you are Mine."  Isaiah 43:1

"But to all who believed and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God." John 1:12

"See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children and that is what we are!"  1 John 3:1

"...in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us."  Romans 8:37

Fearful. That's not my name.

Inadequate. That's not my name.

Defeated. That's not my name.

Child of God. THAT'S my name.

Overcomer. THAT'S my name.

Beloved. THAT'S my name.

And learning to walk in that identity, has the power to change everything.
